Although I grew up with dogs, I have always been more of a cat lady. After moving from Los Angeles to rural Minot, ND, I had my heart set on adopting a puppy to be my future running companion. After visiting Souris Valley Animal Shelter several times, I finally decided to broaden my search beyond puppies and met with an adorable 6 year old Greyhound/Husky mix named, Lollie. I was told that her owner had passed away and that she had been cooped up in the shelter for over 6 months... this completely broke my heart! I couldn't believe that such a sweet, energetic and adorable dog could be overlooked for so long. I knew at that moment that she was coming home with me. I couldn't even image adopting a sweeter or more loving dog. Lollie fit in perfectly right away and with the stamina of a husky and the speed of a greyhound, she is the perfect running buddy. I guess the lesson I learned here is not to have blinders on when looking to adopt a pet. Keep an open mind and don't let age discourage you from adopting... not only are they the ones who really need to be saved, they often are already house-broken and somewhat trained.
