The Souris Valley Animal Shelter, a non-profit organization, was founded in 1977 by nine founding members who could no longer accept the lack of care for homeless animals in Minot, North Dakota. Their original mission was “to be dedicated to the prevention of cruelty to animals and to providing relief for animals that are suffering." In 1984, the Souris Valley Animal Shelter was moved to its current location in South East Minot, thanks in part to donations that were acquired from the community of Minot. When the Souris Valley Animal Shelter opened its doors in 1984, it was designed to house 29 dogs and 50 cats. In 1996 the Souris Valley Animal Shelter was able to add an extra 1,200 square feet of storage and kenneling space.
The Souris Valley Animal Shelter is proud to have 40 years of community service and the successful return or placement of approximately 35,000 animals. In addition, we have closed four major puppy mills. On a national level we have assisted with housing 10 Hurricane Katrina animals, all of which went to loving homes. Within the past 5 years, we have rescued more than 45 dogs from neglect situations. During the flood in Minot of 2011, we opened a Pet Evacuation Center and care for 540+ pets belonging to residents who were evacuated. We ran this facility, in addition to our primary facility, from June 2011 until the end of August 2011. Of the 540+ pets, only 19 were unable to be picked up by their owners and were therefore, brought back with us to our Shelter and placed up for adoption.
Through the hard work and dedication of many, the Souris Valley Animal Shelter has become one of the most well regarded animal care facilities in the state of North Dakota. We've recently updated our mission statement in honor of the work that we do:
The Souris Valley Animal Shelter is an advocate for animals; we speak for those who cannot speak for themselves.
We shelter and care for lost and unwanted animals.
We find lifelong, loving homes for every adoptable pet.
We implement spay/neuter programs.
We promote responsible pet ownership through Humane Education.
· Each year the Souris Valley Animal Shelter (SVAS) finds permanent, loving homes for over 1,000 animals. SVAS provides comprehensive adoption services to the community, including counseling to all adopters of the animals in our care.
· At-risk and homeless animals require expert attention. SVAS’s safety net provides medical intervention, socialization, and compassionate care for all shelter animals, giving them a second chance at life and an opportunity for a new home.
Municipal Trap/Neuter/Release (TNR)
· SVAS currently provides TNR services to all of Minot, including feral kitten adoption, feral adult cat sterilization and vaccinations prior to release. SVAS continues to work with local municipalities to care for these vulnerable animals.
· Humane education presentations, behavioral training advice, cremation services, providing therapy dogs and emergency housing for pets in partnership with the Domestic Violence Crisis Center, YWCA, Red Cross, and multiple assisted living and retirement homes and humane trap rental, are some of the services we offer to Minot and nearby communities.
